5 months home!
My first response is, it’s only been five months? Seriously it feels like it has been a lot longer than that that our baby girl has been home with us! She is doing great and we are as well. I would say the first few months that she was home we were all just getting by, surviving. The next couple of months were just extremely hard, trying to manage our new family. This past month has been good. And I have to say it has a lot to do with a lot of hard work between Sean and I. Working on our communication and marriage. What a difference it makes in a family with the parents are happy!
Emelia’s vocabulary is thriving. I don’t think she is quite up to speed on comprehension, although she does understand a whole lot. I only say this because we have friends with kids younger than Emelia who seem to understand more. But again, we are super encouraged and impressed by how much she does understand. Verbally she tries to say anything you ask her to. I’ve noticed her putting a few words together lately also, like, “Hi Eli” and “I sweep” and “more please”.
Her sleeping is still good, but we are trying to get her on a new schedule. Before she was sleeping in until 8 or 8:30, taking a nap from 2pm until about 4pm and going to bed around 9pm. I want her to nap a little earlier so I have an hour of quiet before the kids get home from school, so I have been getting her up at 7am (I hate waking her up………really hate it), putting her down for a nap at 1pm and she has been waking up at 3pm. We are still having some trouble at bedtime. She isn’t quite ready at 8 when the boys go down, but we still put her to bed and sometimes she will talk for a long time. She always cries when we put her to bed still, but it is often replace by talking or singing within a few minutes.
She is eating like a champ! She pretty much eats whatever we are having. There are only a handful of things that she doesn’t really like, like watermelon (that’s all I can think of right now, but I know there are more things). She has gained more than 2 pounds since she has been home which is really encouraging!
I already cannot believe how different she looks from the first pictures we have of her 5 months ago. She just looks older and more “mature” (I assure you maturity isn’t one of her qualities). She’s starting to grow out of some of her outfits, which would be super sad to me if I didn’t know that her sister would get to wear them someday.
The boys are back to school and Emelia asks about them often during the day. They are home by the time she wakes up from her nap and she seems really happy to see them. They are so good to her. They do get frustrated when she ruins their set up of toys or when she hits them , but overall they are wonderful big brothers to her! I can’t imagine how big she thinks they are!
Some other things she is doing now:
- she is still obsessed with phones or remotes. She cannot help herself if she sees one, she must grab it!
- she can reach the counter now…………..
- she likes to throw herself down in the bathtub, and often gets hurt, but goes back for more, how can I get her to stop doing this?
- we have stopped potty training. it was turning into a power struggle right away. We will try again after the baby is here.
Here are some current pictures!
